The WITCH is Back PDF Print E-mail

DEKATRON

Of course, if you're a computer historian, you already know that WITCH refers to the Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computation from Harwell.

Over 60 years since the first digital computers switched on, the chances of seeing one of these pioneers in action have grown incredibly slim as time (and recycling) takes its toll. Take a visit to Britain's National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, however, and you'll see one working. A finished 3-year restoration effort lets the Harwell Dekatron -- at one point renamed the Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computation from Harwell, or WITCH -- claim the title of the world's oldest functional digital computer still using its original design. Aside from its room-filling dimensions, the 1951-era mainframe may be worth the trip just for recalling a time when there were no hard and fast rules in computing: the Dekatron operates in its namesake decimal system, not binary, and puts most of its components on full display. The computer is part of the regular exhibit lineup and should be easy to see; the daunting part may be realizing that virtually any chip in a 2012 smartphone could outmuscle the Dekatron without breaking a sweat.

What happened to hyperterminal? PDF Print E-mail

There is no HyperTerminal in Windows 7.  Of course, this is a little late knowledge since Windows 8 is already out.  BUT, it's not in Win8 either.

If you want/need to use HyperTerminal there are two ways to obtain it:

1 - Get the old version for free by copying from a Windows XP installation:

Gto a computer that is still using Windows XP then Copy the two  files associated with hyper terminal, hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll, to the Win7/8 computer.
The location of files (in Windows XP): C:\Program Files\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe and C:\WINDOWS\system32\hypertrm.dll

2 - Get the latest version from the software publisher: http://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal/

The 25 worst passwords of 2012 PDF Print E-mail

(TIME) -- If any of your passwords are on this list, then shame on you -- and go change them now.

SplashData, which makes password management applications, has released its annual "Worst Passwords" list compiled from common passwords that are posted by hackers. The top three -- "password," "123456," and "12345678″ -- have not changed since last year. New ones include "jesus," "ninja," "mustang," "password1," and "welcome." Other passwords have moved up and down on the list.

The most surprising addition is probably "welcome."

"That means people are not even changing default passwords," CEO Morgan Slain told TIME Tech. "It doesn't take that much time to make a new password."

You should have different passwords for all of your accounts. To make it easier to remember them all, Slain suggests thinking about passwords as "passphrases." For instance, use a phrase like "dog eats bone" and add underscores, dashes, hyphens, and other punctuation marks to satisfy the special character requirement: "dog_eats_bone!"

Here's the full list:

  1. password
  2. 123456
  3. 12345678
  4. abc123
  5. qwerty
  6. monkey
  7. letmein
  8. dragon
  9. 111111
  10. baseball
  11. iloveyou
  12. trustno1
  13. 1234567
  14. sunshine
  15. master
  16. 123123
  17. welcome
  18. shadow
  19. ashley
  20. football
  21. jesus
  22. michael
  23. ninja
  24. mustang
  25. password1
